I have always been drawn to the concept of public art, and mosaics are a perfect medium for this artform. The process involves first finding public art opportunities - there seem to be many in the western states and notably Florida, but few here in New England. Next, the budget has to be appropriate for one's level of experience. (There are numerous opportunities out there for public art projects over $100,000! which are well out of my price range.)Sometimes the application process entails coming up with a specific concept and sketch, other times it is more general, with images, resume and a proposal explaining why one's art is appropriate for the site. The process itself can be quite demanding, and a LOT of effort put in with minimal and often no compensation. Below are just some of the projects for which I have been an applicant, finalist, or chosen finalist.

PRE-SCHOOL KIDS MOSAIC and RAINBOW |
Info
These mosaic 'cut-outs' are now hanging in a new pre-school wing of a school in Rogers, AR. I referred to them as 'my kids for Arkansas' while working on them in 2006 - 2007. (These images were taken on my living room floor.) The process in this commission was not typical for public art in that the concept was pre-determined by Rogers School. Basically for this commission I translated my style of children's book illustration into the medium of mosaic.
